Angle grinder running about 10,000 RPM with a good course wheel....

You're welcome.

(Sorry, it's Friday night and alchohol IS a drug)

WD-40 has worked OK for me in the past.

Really.

Forget all that toxic shit! just get out the WD-40 it takes the burnt stuff off and doesn't leave any residue. I used it all summer whenever I managed to rub my boot soles on my header pipes. I also took off a melted plastic grocery bag that blew up on my SE's Muffler with the stuff.

Buy yourself a can of oven cleaner designed for use on a COLD oven. Easy-Off makes a "Fume-Free" type that I've used... works well. MAKE SURE you throw some newpaper or (preferably) aluminum foil behind the mufflers and on anything painted or plastic.

I like a product called Goof Off (very easy to use, but don't get it on any plastic or rubber). Clean off the mess with this product and finish with a wipe of Windex.

Most of your better hardware stores carry it.

I use Easyoff oven cleaner...it works, just don't breath the stuff.

If it's burnt on pretty thick, start with a utility knife and cut the big pieces off. Then, go down and buy a stainless steel scrub pad (bun, sponge, whatever). You can get them at any supermarket and they look like this:

http://www.rbspkg.com/washroomequipment/washroomequipment.html

.....see item O, the stainless steel sponge.

Start your bike and let it run till the exhaust pipes are hot. Turn off engine and let pipes cool just enough so liquid cleaner won't boil off. Spray exhaust with Simple Green cleaner and scrub with pad. Removes burnt-on plastic, oil, flesh, etc, and leaves your pipes nice and shiny. And, doesn't require too much effort.

remove the thicker crap with oven cleaner, then any left over marking with mothers rubbing compound.

A tried and true method is to get the pipes hot, and then spray *on a cloth away from the bike*, a small amount of EasyOff oven cleaner and apply to the affected area. DO NOT get the oven cleaner on any painted parts! Let sit for about 5-10 minutes and it'll wipe right off with no damage to the chrome. Rinse with a wet washcloth followed by a dry cloth and your done.

JUST DON'T GET ANY ON YOUR ENGINE, OR ANY PAINTED PARTS AS THE OVEN CLEANER IS VERY CORROSIVE.

Fastest and easiest way I've used to get melted shoe marks off chrome pipes.

The urban legend regarding the use of 0000 steel wool on chrome, and it's "acts of violence" against said substance, must come to an end.

IF indeed the gunk is so heavy that it need "chemical additions", the use of certain agents like the afore mentioned "Oven Cleaner" supposedly works swell.. with a little bit of scrubbing added as well.

Having built a few, and painted a many more show bikes, let alone a plethora of show cars for 20 years, I have not seen the evidence where steel wool "dulls" the chrome.

Also, I have learned from an "old goat" that crumpled up newspaper does a rather nice job of "polishing" it as well, as the ink tends to deposit in the ALREADY THERE fine swirl marks, leaving a rather luxurious finish.

May sound odd but if the pipe is chrome, which I'm assuming it is. You can use nail polish remover with acetone. Just make sure the pipe is cool, pour a little on a wrag and scrub it off. Obviously make sure it doesn't get on paint, wheels, etc.. but works great on chrome. I use it all the time.

Hope this helps

You can remove it with acetone. Most drug stores or hardware stores carry pint bottles of 100% acetone. It doesn't damage the chrome but it will eat paint. You can also use oven cleaner but also watch the paint. I used acetone to remove my plastic rainsuit from my pipes. It softens it up and it wipes off.

Get the pipes warmed up, spray tar & bug remover on towel and wipe. Comes right off.

I let it be, it wears off eventually.

MY OWN NOTE:

Somewhere, way back when there was a post from someone who said "Use gasket remover, available at auto supplies". I haven't found that one in a Google search to put here, but it was supposed to be recommended by his HD mechanic.
